MENLO PARK, CA – Meta, the parent company of Facebook (which changed its corporate name in October 2021 to align with its vision for the “metaverse”), has acquired the domain “Threads.com” for its X (formerly Twitter) competitor, Threads. Originally, Meta launched the service using the domain “Threads.net” due to the prior ownership of Threads.com by another company, which was running a cloud-based team communications platform.
In June 2024, the company that owned Threads.com sold its service to Shopify, which led experts to speculate that the domain could become available. This prediction turned out to be correct, as Meta successfully acquired Threads.com in September 2024.
Interestingly, the domain’s new registrant is not listed as Meta but as Instagram, which is integrated with Threads. Currently, users must sign up for Threads through an Instagram account. The domain transfer occurred around September 23, and while Threads.com is not yet operational, it is expected to redirect to Meta’s social platform soon.
Threads operates similarly to X, allowing users to share text, images, and videos while interacting with others’ posts through replies, reposts, and likes. As of August 2024, the platform boasts over 200 million monthly active users, with approximately 33 million engaging daily.
