GoDaddy or Namecheap: Which Registrar Should You Use to Buy an .AI Domain?

PHOENIX, AZ – With the boom of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution the talk of the technology industry – both for good and bad – the demand for the .AI domain has skyrocketed. Originally an obscure country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the small Caribbean island of Anguilla, it has spiked in popularity with tech companies looking to cash in on the AI craze, making it one of the most popular extensions out there currently.

That being said, the US-based GoDaddy and Namecheap are two of the most well-known and reputable registrars out there, so going to one or the other to acquire an .AI domain seems to be a no-brainer. However, each service comes with their pros and cons, which mainly boil down to pricing – especially when it comes to renewals – and additional services that you can add-on to your current package.

Which is the better choice for an .AI domain?

The minimum registration and renewal period for an .AI domain is two years, and the pricing structure of each company discussed will reflect that. An .AI domain registration via GoDaddy is $200, whereas Namecheap will set you back $160. But once you have acquired your .AI domain, renewals will set you back a bit more: $290 with GoDaddy, and $180 with Namecheap.

Both companies offer Whois privacy protection free of charge; however, Namecheap continues to live up to its name by offering additional services at a lower price than GoDaddy, such as premium DNS, SSL certificates, and web hosting. In addition, Namecheap also often offers periodic special discounts on .AI domain registration that their competitor does not, so sometimes it pays to wait and see if an offer comes up.

But there’s yet another factor to consider: the fees associated with transferring your .AI domain to another registrar. If you chose to do this at a later date, bear in mind that the transfer feel is typically a minimum of $140 – not including domain renewal – so make sure you shop around.

What domain registrar is more popular? Godaddy or NameCheap?

GoDaddy is generally more popular than Namecheap based on overall market share, brand recognition, and the number of domains registered. GoDaddy is one of the largest domain registrars globally, with millions of domain names under its management. It has been in the industry for a long time, offers extensive marketing, and provides a wide range of services beyond domain registration, like website hosting and email services. As of recent available data, GoDaddy has over 84 million domain names under management, making it the largest domain registrar in the world serving over 20 million customers globally.

Namecheap, while highly regarded for affordability and customer service, tends to appeal more to those looking for budget-friendly or privacy-conscious options. It has a loyal customer base, especially among tech-savvy users and domain investors, but in terms of sheer volume and reach, GoDaddy is larger and more widely known. Namecheap manages around 17 million domain names.
