NEW YORK – According to industry news website, DomainNameWire.com, Google’s launch of “.dev” domain names is off to a prosperous start with the zone file representing over 64,000 registrations just one day after it entered general availability. That’s amazing even for a bearish believer of nGTLDs.
I guess it is only a matter of time until more and more people begin accepting the fact that all of the good .com domain names are long gone, and there are these new sort of odd alternative dot names that people will just have to settle for. It’s still pretty unfortunate to have to resort to a secondary pick – alternative domain name, but it will happen eventually, it’s just going to take a really long time for it to become accepted, and maybe never “as good” but people will use them because they are there, and they will begin to notice other people using them.
Especially when Google is behind some of these new alternative URLs and it will benefit Google to do what they can to influence acceptance sooner rather than later.
Much of the Internet is driven by Google.
- Think about it like this, the “nofollow” attribute; if not for Google, no one would have cared enough to begin using it (No one was afraid of Bing).
- If not for Google’s warning of decreases in rankings, much fewer people would have rushed to secure their sites with SSLs, However, Google wanted a more secure web. (By January of 2017 Half the web was already encrypted)
- If not for Google’s action against paid links, the Web Directory business will probably still be flourishing (but Google Killed It).
- If not for Google’s mobile preferences, people probably wouldn’t even care about AMP (accelerated mobile pages) or be rushing to transform their sites into responsive sites.
It’s always about Google.
- Look at how Google damaged the domain parking business by not ranking domains when parked (as well as killing CPCs).
- Look at how Google devalued exact match domains with the EMD penalty (No longer a golden ticket to ride).
Our world follows Google. Google makes and breaks businesses. People do what Google Wants. When Google wants something, most webmasters, domainers and site owners, listen. So what does all of this mean?

I’m sure Google would like to see these nGTLDs survive and flourish. They must have spent $100 million on this endeavor thus far; they spent $25 million just to secure .app domains. However, Google does know when to through in the towel if things don’t materialize, evidenced by this list of Google failures.
