NEW YORK, NY – The development team behind the Shiba Inu cryptocurrency – inspired by the Shiba Inu, a Japanese dog breed which also serves as the mascot for Dogecoin – is planning on launching the first ever crypto top-level domain in partnership with domain company D3.

Shiba Inu are currently waiting for approval of the new domain, “.shib,” which is slated to be utilized for websites and email for what is being described as a “decentralized identity project for internet domains.” The developer noted that they are working with D3 on applying for the proposed top-level domain through the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the nonprofit organization that oversees the domain industry.

All applications for internet domains are submitted through and vetted by ICANN, and if that application is approved, it gives the owners the ability to sell all of the domains within a specific suffix. However, what Shiba Inu are hoping to accomplish by establishing a crypto top-level domain is to gain the ability to tie a crypto wallet’s owner to a domain name, which would allow the owner to use that as proof of their identity as it pertains to blockchain applications. Currently, these applications do not work through internet browsers, email, or cell phones.

Crypto wallets keep a user’s private keys – the passwords that give them access to their cryptocurrencies – safe and accessible, allowing them to send and receive cryptocurrencies.

If ICANN approves application for the “.shib” domain, according to Shiba Inu Lead Developer Shytoshi Kusama, they will become one of the first Web3 networks with their own DNS namespace.

Our partnership with D3 allows us to scale outside of the existing ShibArmy and give over 5 billion Internet users direct access to the SHIB ecosystem,” he said. “Bringing real domains to SHIB is a big deal, expanding our vision for digital identities within our decentralized ecosystem while driving long-term revenue generation within the ecosystem.”
