PHILADELPHIA, PA – Leading internet service provider, Xfinity, recently released information regarding a major data breach that is expected to have affected millions of customers. The offenders exploited a vulnerability left by a patch, causing unauthorized access to software provider Citrix, a system used by Xfinity. It is important for Xfinity users to amend their usernames and passwords in response to this breach, even if their data has not been directly exposed.

While the breach was first noticed in October, it was not until December that Xfinity discovered the theft of personal information. The stolen data includes the last four digits of some users’ social security numbers and answers to security questions. Despite this, Xfinity confirms they are currently unaware of significant leaks or overt attacks on customers.

Although involving a considerable number of nearly 36 million customers, this unfortunate incident provides an opportunity to explore the significance of robust cybersecurity measures. A cybersecurity expert emphasized the crucial role that end-users, in addition to Xfinity, can play in preventing such intrusions. He advocated for a widespread understanding and employment of cyber hygiene rules to ensure self-protection.

In response to the breach, Xfinity swiftly enacted measures to secure user accounts. They are now mandating all customers to reset their account usernames and passwords and engage multi factor authentication. Comcast, Xfinity’s parent company, reiterated its commitment to maintaining robust operations in helping protect their customers, a sentiment echoed by Xfinity via a proactive approach in introducing these measures.

Quashing any doubts about the cybersecurity incident’s cause, Comcast blatantly acknowledged the vulnerability present in their software system – Citrix. The advent of the breach is traced back to the patch update that Citrix released. Despite its initial intention of fixing bugs, the patch instead exposed the software to unauthorized access.

The aftermath of the data breach has resulted in multiple ramifications. One of them is a class-action lawsuit that Citrix now faces. Meanwhile, Xfinity remains transparent and determined to rectify the issue. The company doubled-down on their commitment to investing in the finest technology, protocols, and experts with the proficiency to shield their customers’ data.

Xfinity initiated an investigation into the breach to understand the extent of its impact and prevent future inconsistencies. In a initiative to address customers’ concerns, Xfinity also invited users to reach the company through a dedicated call center.

The illegal access to Xfinity’s internal systems occurred between Oct. 16 and Oct. 19, 2023, after Citrix patched its vulnerability. As a consequence, unauthorized users accessed a vast array of customer data. Details exposed included not only names and contact information but also account usernames and passwords, birth dates, partial social security numbers, as well as the aforementioned answers to security questions.
