PALM BEACH, FL – On Thursday, September 30, 2021, luxury department store Neiman Marcus announced that about 4.6 million of its customers may have had their personally identifiable information or PII compromised in a data breach that occurred in May 2020.
The personal information stolen in the breach varied and may have included names and contact information, payment card numbers and expiration dates including virtual gift card numbers. Worse, the cyber-thieves may have also stolen usernames, passwords, and security questions and answers associated with Neiman Marcus online accounts.
A 2018 Global Password Security Report showed a staggering 50 percent of people use the same passwords for their personal and work accounts while a 2019 online security survey by Google identified such similar use as high as 65 percent for people who use the same password for multiple or even all their online accounts.
If you have or had a Neiman Marcus account on or around May 2020 or any time before that you should change your credentials for any online account that may use similar credentials. Neiman Marcus has posted an official notice of data breach on their website, which includes their recommendations on what you can do moving forward.
