ICANN Moves Forward With 20 Million Deal While World Preoccupied with Epidemic

PALM BEACH, FL – Rahm Emanuel once said, “You never let a serious crisis go to waste.” I’d bet that’s been on the mind of ICANN, The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, these last couple weeks, as President and CEO, Göran Marby, announced the organization has decided to move forward with its controversial twenty-million-dollar deal, many feel is nothing short of a bribe, with its latest renewal of the .com Registry Agreement with Verisign.

After ongoing feedback from the Internet community and in close consultation with the #ICANN Board, ICANN org has decided to execute the amendment of the .COM Registry Agreement and the proposed binding Letter of Intent. The agreement allows Verisign to increase prices by 7% during each of the last four years of each six-year contract renewal.

While controversial, you must admit, this was the ideal time to rip-the-band aid off and deal with the repercussions later.

The comments are beginning to roll in on Twitter.

Apparently, the only feedback that mattered was Verisign's and the extra money they pay ICANN.

#ShameOnYou

You, #ICANN staff and the Board are making a mockery of the public comment periods. They have destroyed any semblance of their own legitimacy.

You have no business pretending to represent the "public interest" any longer.

— George Kirikos (@GeorgeKirikos) March 27, 2020

ICANN has received nothing but blowback, ever since the deal came to light as it ignored thousands of public comments on the deal as it wreaks of detrimental effects to domain name owners across the globe – all while the organization is supposed to act as a steward for the public good.

It appears the organization need not even pretend it serves that purpose.

Verisign shareholders will be very pleased.

While many feel that this deal represents a larger debate about who holds the right to approve price increases and whether or not price increases are even warranted to begin with, it really isn’t. To ICANN and Verisign, it’s just a deal about twenty-million-dollars. Nothing else matters.
