NEW YORK, NY – According to NameBio, there were a total of 936 reported .Biz domain sales over the last 5 year period. These top 100 total $474,673.00 in sales. The highest reported sales on this list were the domains “Hotel.biz” for $25,000.00 with the second place name as “LLC.biz” for $23,520.00. Hotel.biz redirects to Hotels.com while LLC.biz is developed and appears to be owned by a German company.

Significant as far as recent gTLD discussions and debate, although .biz includes no restrictions or geographic qualifications to register (except that it must be for bona fide business or commercial use), the extension, which is intended to serve as an abbreviation to “Business”, has not grown much in popularity despite being available since 2001 (over 16 years).

Below are the top .biz domain name sales over the past five (5) years based on data from NameBio. 65% of all transactions took place on domain venue Sedo.

This is one of those gTLDs that seems to make sense in my opinion, as the ‘biz’ is a great abbreviation for business, but for whatever reason, it just did not do that well. The International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) did a research study on .biz which is interesting to read though.

The BIZ Top-Level Domain: Ten Years Later (PDF).

Within its conclusion you will find:

“And while one could conclude that it has failed to rival com, biz did extract defensive registrations from existing domain owners.”
