LifeLock Confirms My Data Was Revealed on “The Dark Web” After 2021 “Epik” Data Leak

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – This morning I received an email notification that information or data which is presumed to be connected to my identity has been found on “The Dark Web” after the domain name and hosting company, Epik.com was hacked last year. The service is part of LifeLock by Norton.

The following message arrived:

Logging into my account a more detailed explanation explains that my personal information associated with the epik.com leak was located on the Dark Web in September 2021.

You received this Notification because your information has been shared improperly on the dark web. The exposed information may be associated with the website/service epik.com.

According to the notification my email address and password, which has likely changed several times by now, was leaked and exposed.

Dark Web

Although this warning only included notification of my email address and password being leaked, a story out of the Washington Post (if accurate) reveals that an Epik spokesperson at the time said the breached data included up to 38,000 credit card numbers.

This is just another reminder of why it is important to use different passwords for different websites and to change them periodically, even if it seems it is for no reason.

Not every breach is reported.

The Epik data breach occurred in 2021 and quickly became a hot-button political issue as the company was ridiculed and primarily targeted for supporting and hosting the websites of conservative groups as well as free speech advocates.

The company owner, Rob Monster was referred to by nearly every left-leaning publication as a ‘supervillain’ compared to the likes of “Lex Luthor” created by D.C. Comics and his services labeled an Infrastructure of Hate for Extremist Groups.

Our Epik CEO, Rob Monster, will be featured this afternoon at FreedomFest Friday! Catch the conversation at https://t.co/zcuvDiPyvJ#BeEpik #FreedomFest #Epik #Domains #FreeSpeech https://t.co/OtgosiRiqy

I’m glad to see that his company has weathered that storm on both fronts, security, and reputation, and that standing up for what he felt was the right thing to do, did not destroy the company. It’s not easy to do and not everyone can do it. It takes real courage.

P.T. Barnum, founder of the Barnum & Bailey Circus in the 1800s once said, “There’s no such thing as bad publicity” — meaning even bad press is better than no press at all.
