Uh Oh: 400,000 Less gTLD Registrations First Quarter of 2018, Vs Previous Quarter
NEW YORK – New gTLD proponents will be less than excited to learn that according to the latest Verisign Domain Name Industry Brief, new gTLD domain registrations, despite there being more awareness 🙂 and more names available for registration, such extensions experienced a decline of 400,000 registrations or loss of 2% within the first Quarter of 2018 (Q1) when compared to the last Quarter of 2017 (Q4).
Verisign creates these industry briefs to include quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year metrics in order to accurately reflect the growth rate (or decline) of domain name registrations.
According to their Q4 2017 report, total new gTLDs (ngTLDs) domain name registrations during the previous period were approximately 20.6 million. In contrast, their latest report for Q1 2018 reflects approximately 20.2 million, a decrease of 0.4 million or 400,000 less domain name registrations, (-2.0%), in comparison.
nGTLDs, according to a launch schedule published by WebNames.ca (those not considered country code domains), becoming available during the first quarter was .APP ([266,959] registrations) while released during the previous quarter was .RUGBY (just [35] registrations).
- .COM domains increased from 131.9M to 133.9M.
- .NET decreased from 14.5M to 14.4 and
- .ORG held their ground remaining at 10.3M.
