REDMOND, WA – Microsoft is investigating a widespread Exchange Online outage Monday that is causing email delays, failed messages and authentication problems for businesses and users across the United States.

The incident, identified by Microsoft as EX1464935, is affecting Exchange Online, the cloud infrastructure behind email for millions of Microsoft 365 business customers.

Users have reported emails failing to send or arrive, Outlook connection problems, authentication errors and difficulties accessing Exchange administration tools. Downdetector recorded thousands of reports as the disruption spread Monday.

Microsoft says engineers have isolated a common failure pattern involving authentication and protocol connectivity and are reviewing service telemetry to determine the underlying source of the problem and possible remediation. The company has not yet publicly identified the root cause.

Some IT administrators have speculated that an expired or improperly renewed certificate could be involved based on errors being reported during the outage, although Microsoft has not confirmed that theory.

The outage is particularly disruptive for businesses that rely on Microsoft 365 as their primary email platform. Because the failure appears to be occurring within Microsoft’s Exchange Online infrastructure, affected companies may have little ability to resolve the problem from their own servers, networks or Outlook installations.

It also comes after several other Exchange Online disruptions this year, including a June incident that affected mail flow in multiple regions and earlier mailbox-access problems involving several Outlook platforms.

As of Monday afternoon, Microsoft had not announced an estimated time for full restoration.
