Report: Domain Squatting, Brand Hijacking Presenting Increased Threat Across Internet

November 16, 2023 By John Colascione Leave a Comment

Domain Squatting, Brand Hijacking

PALM BEACH, FL - “Domain squatting” – AKA cybersquatting – and “brand hijacking” are two internet-based threats that present unique dangers to both businesses and end users, opening up some to cybersecurity threats and brand/trademark damage including potential phishing and malware attacks.  Domain squatting is registering or using a domain name to profit from a trademark belonging to a well-known brand, typically by registering a misspelled version of their URL to … [Read more...]

Seven Years Later, New gTLD “.Cars” Still Driving Long & Winding Road to Nowhere

September 18, 2023 By John Colascione 3 Comments

Cars

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – I recently wanted to see what was going on with the “. Cars” domain name, so I tried visiting a site I thought would probably be one of the best names; “used.cars”…. Not much is going on there; the page just fails to load. Same thing with “used.car”, “new.car” and “new.cars”. A “.cars” domain name costs $2,499 per year to register, renew, or transfer at Dynadot, one of the largest domain name registrars in the world. Same thing with ".Car" which was … [Read more...]

CVS Pharmacy Files WIPO Against “CVS.inc” Domain; Reg Fees Headed Towards Earth

October 26, 2019 By John Colascione 1 Comment

PALM BEACH, FL – It looks like CVS Pharmacy, Inc. isn’t too thrilled with the recent registration of the nGTLD domain name “CVS.inc” which looks to have been registered in May, 2019. The pharmacy company has filed a WIPO dispute (WIPO D2019-2615) which will likely result in a TRANSFER as the majority of their complaints follow that trend. The “CVS.inc” domain name is listed on the get.inc website under “Who's Buying” in the ”recent registrations section” for companies … [Read more...]

Trump Campaign Cyber-Squats on Biden by Snapping Up Domain Name, Social Pages

October 26, 2019 By John Colascione 5 Comments

PALM BEACH, FL – Presidential hopeful Joe Biden created a new outreach ad-campaign targeting specifically Latino voters called “Todos con Biden” (Everyone with Biden) and it appears his campaign team is just about as smart as he is; they forgot it should include an Internet presence. This opened the opportunity for the Trump Campaign, which they immediately did, to register not just the domain name, but to scoop-up corresponding social media pages with it. Cybersquatting, … [Read more...]

Chrysler Corp “Stops the Bleeding” With Release, Cancellation of Branded Domains

September 23, 2019 By John Colascione Leave a Comment

PALM BEACH, FL – Better days are ahead for the Chrysler Corporation, who according to Domain Name Wire, has terminated its [unfortunate] “obligation” to continue “flushing money down the drain” with the drop/release of the following “dot brand” domain names: .Uconnect, .SRT, .Mopar, .Dodge, .Chrysler, all of which, according to DNW, were owned and administrated by what is now known as FCA US LLC, (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). Just one “gamble” remains, “.Jeep”, which, … [Read more...]

Verisign Warns Industry: Far Greater Worry Then Their Minuscule Rate Increase

November 3, 2018 By John Colascione 4 Comments

NEW YORK, NY – They say that when you mess with the bull, you get the horns. Yesterday, Verisign, the company behind all issuing of .com domain names to ICANN approved registries, came out blasting attempts by industry insiders trying to control a price cap that was set by something called the Cooperative Agreement, an agreement between the NTIA (National Telecommunications and Information Administration) and Verisign (NASDAQ: VRSN), which for years,  prevented any increase … [Read more...]

A Look at the Top 100 “.IO” Domain Names Sold in During Past 12 Months (2017-2018)

May 3, 2018 By John Colascione 1 Comment

NEW YORK - Today I purchased two domain names in the '.io' extension - which continues to do well (and I only have a few; less than 10). I registered Heaters.io and Injured.io and I will see what happens with those. They seem like great domains and for Reg fee, there is little to loose. I'm not too sure why the IO tld has done so well recently (it's been around since 1997), but I don't fully understand cryptocurrency either, and that continues to dominate much of the … [Read more...]

You ‘Need Not’ Register A Domain to Keep Your Company ‘Tag Line’ or Slogan Safe

April 21, 2018 By John Colascione Leave a Comment

NEW YORK, NY – You might not need to bother registering a domain name to keep your brands tag line or slogan safe from violators – at least, that must be the general consensus within the industry as nearly none of the 200 company slogans and tag lines I’ve examined have done so. To my surprise, just a few have thought that registering their catchy phrase in a .com name is worthwhile. Below are a few of the companies which have their tag lines and trademark terms registered … [Read more...]

Audio Arguments for ‘Calculated Theft’ Attempt of HeidiPowell.com Domain

April 1, 2017 By John Colascione 2 Comments

NEW YORK, NY - For those who are unaware of the backstory behind the failed cyber-squatting attempt by Arizona Heidi in her effort to steal the online identity of the original Heidi Powell, the effort continues via opening of an old bankruptcy case to acquire the domain name HeidiPowell.com. UNITED STATES BANKRUPTCY COURT WESTERN DISTRICT OF WASHINGTON AT SEATTLE before Honorable Marc Barreca, Chapter 7, Hearing Date: March 22, 2017, Hearing Time: 10:00 a.m. Even if … [Read more...]

New gTLD Success Will Be Measured Only by Use; Not Sales, Not Registrations

March 26, 2017 By John Colascione 9 Comments

NEW YORK, NY - This week a new gTLD sale made the news, not because of its great keyword, but due to its high price and its ending extension. The domain name casino.online recently sold for over $200,000.00 at SEDO. This might seem like a domainers dream-sale turning a lucky registrant into an instant success, but it was far from a general availability registration; it was actually a domain name reserved by the registry. So basically, it was, for the most part, a planned … [Read more...]

Domain Suspension – Registrant Information Verification Failure; It Could Happen to You

February 4, 2017 By John Colascione 4 Comments

REMINDER: If you change either the first name, last name or email address on one of your domain registrations, you’ll need to verify the new information via email within 15 calendar days or you will be met with a page similar to this one in the below screenshot. This new policy took effect back in January of 2014 but this is how long it took for me to actually see one of these pages in action; it happened today. Not paying attention to those email verification … [Read more...]

Entrepreneurial Thinkers: Registering Your Own Trademark; Without Hiring a Lawyer

August 31, 2016 By John Colascione

Many business owners and entrepreneurial thinkers would probably like to register a trademark but they think it’s too expensive or that you have to hire a few lawyers to get it done. Not so. Registering your own trademark is fairly easy to do provided you know a little about, well, what you want the trademark to be – That’s it. The process is easier than you might think. Now the office for Trademarks is the same office where you would file a patent, a much more complicated … [Read more...]
