NEW YORK – A few weeks ago at NamesCon Global 2019 one of the industry’s best domain names, in my opinion, was acquired by Uniregistry, the brainchild of founder Frank Schilling, who operates the company from its Cayman Islands headquarters.

As many in the domain industry were, Schilling was in attendance and won the highest bid on DomainNames.com for $370,000, one of the largest sales in the live auction. The remainder of domains which were not sold at the live event, continue to receive bids at NameJet.com until later today (not much later so hurry up if you intend to bid).

Watch It Happen

The video of this specific name sale was posted to LinkedIn.com on February 5, 2019 by Jordi Gasull, CEO at NameAgency.com

In my opinion, this domain name sale is a good reflection of where exactly the industry is at this time – effected by doubt, EMD weakness and new gTLDs.

This is a “category killer” absolutely fantastic domain name that is the exact match for many domain name companies, registrars, registries, etc., all of which Uniregistry is, which is why I believe this was a fantastic acquisition in a buyers market.

However, what is equally interesting to look at with this specific sale, purchased by both an investor and end user, is that if this was ten years ago, this name would have been a seven figure sale – at minimum.

From the looks at the auction DomainNames.com had just one other serious bidder and in my opinion was sold for far less than many were likely expecting it to – considering its global use, the interest in a domain name like this, its sale as a domain name industry event, in front of a wide audience of industry participants.

Here is just one example list of related companies whom also could have benefited from acquiring this name, which was sold by one of the first registries in the business, Network Solutions (Web.com Inc), monumental in itself.

Absolutely correct. This is a real headscratcher. The category killing domain name in the DOMAIN NAME industry had just two real bidders contesting it. This sale will continue to reverberate through the industry for a long time to come.

Buying the traffic on the keyword “domain names” from google costs as much as $20 a click. If this name gets 100 visits a day then the buyer is saving $2000 a day in ad-cost.
